Eating Like Elvis

Elvis Presley loved toasted peanut butter and banana
sandwiches. I tried one. They're not that good, but
over time I suppose it could grow on me.
It sure grew on Elvis.
The King weighed around 250 pounds when he died over 30 years ago. I doubt if his death could be attributed to toasted peanut butter and banana sandwiches, but that could have been a contributory cause.
There's barely 400 calories and only 17 grams of fat in peanut butter and banana sandwich, toasted or otherwise. Compared to a Big Mac from McDonald's, Elvis was dieting.
The Big Mac with cheese tops out at nearly 750 calories and a whopping 43 grams of fat. Think about Elvis the next time you drive through a Mickey-D's.
What else was in Elvis' kitchen? Obviously, plenty of bread, peanut butter, and bananas. And a toaster oven (a regular standup toaster won't do it-- I tried).
What was on Elvis' menu? As a child, growing up in a small Mississippi town, and later in Memphis, The King likely dined on rabbits, squirrels, and a variety of innards from formerly living creatures.
As an adult, Elvis may have enjoyed the occasional peanut butter and banana sandwich, but his indulgence in food and medicine was uncontrolled. The King could have anything he wanted, and usually got what he asked for.
Some biographers wrote that Elvis loved meat loaf and Memphis barbecue. Regarding the latter, who doesn't?
Cooking for Elvis was probably a wonderful adventure in the basics of southern dining. Southerners love to eat. Elvis loved everything.
Dining with Elvis was probably a special treat, not so much for the food or quantities, but for the company, and the historic moment played over again and again, year after year.
Walk through the local shopping center or mall and watch the people around you. What do you see more of than anything else?
Overweight people.
The King could afford to eat like a king, ate like a king, and died like many kings-- overweight, out of shape-- only to be memorialized in the last place for what he once was, which wasn't real in the first place.
Too many people eat and live like Elvis. Are you like Elvis? Will you die like Elvis?
