I Lost 5 Years Yesterday

I can't tell you exactly what happened because Sunday was a day like any other day. I woke up. I lost five years.

Somehow, from the time I went to sleep the night before, to the time shortly after I woke up, most of the details of the past five years seem to have disappeared.

It's not like I have amnesia, though I have more empathy and a little envy for some who can't remember anything. I still have the same vocabulary (except for the day to day loss of words people my age seem to have).

Much of the detail of the past five years seems to be a blur. Technical knowledge has been retained, so I'm able to sit down and work, but trying to remember what I've done or accomplished in the past five years or so leaves me tired, and what I do remember is blurry, as if watching scenes in a movie through someone else's glasses.

I know we took a number of vacations in the past five years, and the destinations seem plausible, though the details are just gone. We visited relatives and friends. I don't remember what we talked about or what we did.

Have you ever taken a long, monotonous drive in a car, and near the end of the trip you don't remember the last 10 miles (with turns, stops, traffic, etc.)? Obviously you arrived safely at your destination, but you just don't remember the details for the past 10 minutes or so. Has that happened to you? I hear it's common.

Less common is waking up and feeling the same "missing" sensation and have it extend back so many years. Where did I go? What did I do? What did I eat? Who was I with? Nothing appears out of the ordinary but something is missing.

Damn, I hate it when SciFi Channel runs those Twilight Zone marathons on holiday weekends.
