Basic Diet Rules That Never Fail

I weigh the same today as I did when I was 24. Of course, I've gained and lost a thousand pounds or so since then.

Since then I've settled down on my eating habits and exercise regularly. Rules are more difficult to remember as we age, so I've kept my dietary rules to a minimum. Simple is better. That makes the diet better, as in easier to remember, easier to follow, easier to tolerate.

No wheat, no milk, no sugar, don't eat what I can't pronounce. That's pretty basic, huh?

I have an allergy to wheat and milk, so avoid both as if they're a mutant bubonic plague in a submarine sandwich. Wheat and milk cause severe digestion problems, and a nearly immediate reaction, so, for the most part, I avoid both.

Avoid? Yes, avoid as in no cookies, cakes, pies, or candy bars unless they have dark chocolate. Somehow dark chocolate counteracts all the known bad effects. Sugar? Somehow or another my muscles and joints don't like granulated sugar, the C & H variety or any other kind in a 5 or 10 pound bag. So, no iced tea.

Sugar in the form of high fructose corn syrup does not seem to cause any problems whatsoever, other than keeping my weight stable, despite the warnings that HFCS is worse than sugar. Trust me, for me, it's not, hence an occasional trip to the Pepsi-Cola fountain at the corner mart.

If I can't pronounce something on the label of ingredients, I usually dispense with the purchase, which also eliminates stocking the shelves with what can't be good for me.

To the basic rules I've added a few other guidelines. No yeast. Frankly, it causes a change in personality, not to mention little burn patches which show up on my scalp, arms, and legs. I can't see a burn patch, but I can feel it.

No chicken. I don't know what they stuff into chicken these days to make them plump, but it requires that said chicken be smothered in something else to provide taste. How about the skin on pieces of Kentucky Fried Chicken? I love it.

That's it. Pretty basic, huh? I'll eat plenty of fish, some beef, no pork, no chicken, no turkey. I'll eat plenty of vegetables (even lima beans, but no cauliflower), plenty of fruit.

Did I mention fountain Pepsi-Cola with crushed ice?
