The Shocking Truth Of The Adults Ball
Saturday, July 05, 2008 Filed in: People
My intent is honest. If you're not an adult yet,
there's still time. Don't go there. It's more
shocking than you can believe.
As children, we were lied to. We were told we would enjoy the rest of our lives so choose to do things we enjoy, things that bring in a good living, plan for tomorrow. Drivel and blather are the propaganda of adults to non-adults.
The shocking truth is that adulthood brings a measure of freedom that you don't have when you're a non-adult, and a measure of responsibility that should scare you, shock you if you could or would only find out the truth.
It's a shocking truth. Adulthood is not fun.
As an adult we get the components of life we've dreamed of, right? A car, a job, a place to live that's not where our parents live, and time to do all we couldn't do when slaving through school.
Here's the truth. About 10 hours a day will be devoted to mindless work that helps pay for all the trappings of life. About eight hours a day are devoted to sleeping and bathing and basic hygiene.
What does that leave? Not much. Six hours. Maybe.
Subtract from that amount the various mundane chores like house cleaning, car washing, cooking, eating, paying bills, sitting in traffic, waiting in line, yammering endlessly on the cell phone, ruining your eyes in front of a computer, and the list goes on.
What does that leave? Not much. A couple of hours a day.
Two hours? That's really all you get to yourself as an adult, and I'm stretching to give you that much. Add children to the mix and your very life is disappearing before your weakening eyes, decaying physical abilities, and diminished mental capacity.
You've got just enough energy each day to start the process anew and lie to your children about how cool it will be to grow up and become an adult.
It's the shocking truth. We've been invited to the Adults Ball. It's worse than Hotel California. You can check out any time you please, but you can never leave.
